Many of these arches mark the entrance of shrines or temples, and it is believed that the act of passing under the torii purifies the soul. Several torii arranged together create a beautiful hallway that allows slivers of sunshine in between the eaves. Torii gates are often made of wood or bamboo, and they are often painted vermillion. The reddish of the gate in this backdrop symbolizes happiness and prosperity in many Asian cultures. The lone torii seems to float atop a shallow pool of water in the daylight with Mt. Fuji, a famous and snowy Japanese mountain peak in the background. The cherry blossom tree’s buds grow into pink flowers as the spring season approaches.
